LNG produces half the co2 coal does when burned and serves as transition away from all fossil fuels. It's also better than Hydrogen. And I think the reason Alberta UCP are so focused on O & G is because of the money. Once the capital costs are met, solar and wind are free. The most short sighted thing I've heard is a plan to use small modular reactors to extract the oil in the Oil Sands.
