Pretty impressive, if you ask me

2026-07-15 16:01 UTC

A student pilot successfully landed a plane by herself after her instructor jumped to his death mid-flight. She said her instructor told her “You know what to do” before leaping from the aircraft. The article shows a picture of the instructor next to an image of a small single engine cessna. Comment reads: You could literally land a plane by yourself after your instructor jumps to his death mid-flight and they’d still use a picture of a man.

They’ve got a point. I’d much rather have seen this heroic student pilot’s portrait!

the media loves stories about successful men, and pictures of attractive women. maybe she didn’t want to be named/photographed

Not to dampen the legit argument being made here, but…

lol she made such an unnecessary comment… of course they’re going to give the spotlight to the dude who did a crazy suicide. That’s what the story is about. Is she more surprised that a woman was able to land a plane? That’s telling

Might have also been an image to portrait the dip shit, but trusting flight instructor. They do have a look of confidence in the situation and I cannot imagine a being a confident student in this situation. But fuck that. They didn’t mean that. And doing such an act is bad. Don’t glorify them. To be fair, I strongly suspect this story to be fabricated.

It is expected for a trained pilot (she had a PPL) to land a plane. Suicide by jumping from a plane is the story.

It’s the guy that jumped, and the plane, and the student doesn’t want her picture shown. It’s a funny meme otherwise, I guess, but she’s not pictured because she asked not to be. 🤷‍♀️

The original also mentioned how the new woman pilot didn’t damage the plane when she landed. Which is important when your instructor jumps out and leaves you in the plane. Although also important to note that the new pilot had already flown many times during training and was just getting hours so why point out that she didn’t damage the plane during landing.

This reminded me of another story of someone managing to land a plane. This poor lady’s husband had a heart attack, and she had to have people teach her over the radio how to land it. It was running out of fuel. There is audio on youtube. I am so impressed by her. I can’t even imagine keeping it together if my partner had just died and I was in a plane I had no idea how to operate. www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-17605770
