A #CRT isn't the only way to scan a phosphor screen with a particle beam!
You could also use a laser. This avoids most of the problems with CRTs:
* No heavy envelope or dangerous vacuum. Light isn't blocked by air.
* No high voltage. Lasers don't need it.
* No x-ray emissions.
* Lasers use less power.
Only thing is how do you deflect the beam? Best answer so far: mechanically, with a moving mirror. Sounds pretty fragile.
Still, neat. Retro-futuristic “what's old is new again” vibe.
