@doctormo@floss.social @RickiTarr@beige.party Conservatives, IME, tend to think they won't personally be affected by things until they are personally affected by things. It doesn't matter to them if my child or your child is impacted; only if their child is impacted, and maybe not even then. ("Well, they just have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, like I did.") There's a huge lack of empathy and logic when it comes to policy for conservatives. A short-term win of punishing the "weak" or the other is worth the (not so) long-term risk that they'll be harmed. There's plenty of interviews now with FAFO'ed conservatives who are being bitten by Trump's policies, and it's amazing how few are introspective enough to see that they did it to themselves. They really thought they'd be exempted from consequences.

@jzb@hachyderm.io @CJPaloma@mstdn.social Stories. Firstly facts don't matter, only stories do. Secondly fear. This type of person is riven by insecurities and fear, it's what drives their darker policies. Thirdly I think I disagree is the nuance for a lot of conservatives. Forget the knobs you see in highlights, those folks are the worst. Your average conservative doesn't lack empathy, their empathy is foreshortened. It is highly focused around their family and friends and much less on anything outside. @RickiTarr@beige.party
