@Bumblefish@mastodon.scot @kolya@social.cologne the "feeling of belonging" is a hell of a drug (to us humans) and is basically THE cheat-code to override any other psychological system we've got. Status meant life or death for our species once, and long enough for it to sit above anything Maslow put in his pyramid of needs. It's very, very hard to move away from any social group that accepts you (or the "you" you present to them) for the unknown. The trick is to have another social grouping that they know will catch them.
