1998: Everything was in config files or source files; documentation was often sparse; finding an answer to a question often involved lots of trying, some discussion, and sometimes failure and moving on.
2026: Everything is on a service platform or AI gated; documentation is often wrong; finding an answer involves being told lots of wrong things by search, support AIs, and trying isn't really an option anymore. You don't get to fail, you are just told no.

I got into computing because I didn't have to ask permission, and I was rewarded for trying. Today I feel that my job is to find more creative ways to get permission just to do even basic tasks. I'm sitting with this feeling, and I"m not ok with it.
