@cflynnbooks@mastodonapp.uk An English friend was showing me round Amsterdam. “The old church is down that way,” he said. “And a newer one is along here.” “I can see that from the street names,” say I. “I didn’t know you spoke Dutch!” “I don’t, but the street names give it away.” Oudkerksplein and Niewe Kerkstraat were obvious to me, and completely obscure to him.

@allypally@mastodon.scot Scotland calls them Kirks, so we’d be familiar with the street names too.
