We got to Dessau and had to make our way through the station and out to find the side entrance to platform one, where we found a very cute little BR 672 single-car DMU. These are LVT/S trains made by Deutsche Waggonbau, as an alternative to the double-decker rail busses that occasionally run on this railway. The Dessau-Wörlitz Eisenbahn is a relic of a bygone era, that has its own fascinating history, first as a freight line, then part of DR, its absorption into DB after the fall of the Berlin Wall, before finally falling under the management and funding of the Land of Saxony-Anhalt. It’s effectively run as a heritage railway, though with a regular service of 5 trains each day in each direction between Dessau and Wörlitz, and it is covered under the D-ticket. It’s a fascinating ride through an old single-track line, through fields, woods, and some unlikely railway crossings, with the driver merrily tooting away as we go past everything. Definitely worth a visit.

In the 1760s, Duke Leopold III of Anhalt-Dessau and his good friend and architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff, embarked on a Grand Tour across Europe. They wanted to see what landscaped gardens looked like in other parts of Europe, and bring back ideas to make the most beautiful garden anywhere, but incorporating modern ideas. In the early 1770s, now back home in Wörlitz, Duke Leopold started laying out what became 142 km2 of amazing stately gardens. These are considered the first and largest English Parks in Germany, as he was heavily influenced by the gardens at Stourhead. Full of manicured lawns, little nooks and corners under variegated woods, impressively majestic trees, well-kept paths, and surrounding both banks of a branch of the Elbe river, the Garden Realms of Dessau-Wörlitz were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. But we’re not… actually, no, l we are here for all this. It’s still peaceful. It’s still serene. And it’s still enjoyable.
