I am mildly tempted by smart plugs and temperature monitors. What "smart home" tech doesn't phone home or will continue to work if firewalled off the internet? As in, are there standards or manufacturers I could look for that would narrow the selection a bit? Or are they just all bad?

@stephen@ephemera.vital.org.nz z-wave, though it’s expensive, ZigBee, and Thread - home assistant has details on setting up your own Thread border router, though there’s likely some premade thread routers that don’t talk to the internet. Most of Ikea’s smart home products are Thread. I now use all three of those - Hue ZigBee lighting, Ikea Thread air quality monitor, ZWave smart switches since I’ve had those the longest

  • (You can assume I have the capability to eg create a separate VLAN to put such things on if necessary).

  • @stephen@ephemera.vital.org.nz I've got (but have not yet installed) a bunch of old Sonoff devices (in-flush-box temp sensors & power switches, wifi & Zigbee), a couple unbranded 'Zigbee Smart Switch'es, and a couple Shelly 1PM Gen4s (to be used to switch on 16amp hot water cyclinder & car charging socket). With a local Zigbee hub, I don't think any 'cloud' service support is required. There're all mighty cheap on Aliexpress...
