And it doesn't matter that it's X.org stalling the GPU. Anything that can open /dev/dri/card* can. And as I said: Using GPUs for simple graphics stuff (and everything you can do with X11 core and Xrender is simple) is wasteful. I keep repeating myself: Do not use the GPU unless you absolutely have to. And that extends to the X11 server.
