@sendpaws@mitra.pawslut.party >XMPP I think that is a waste of effort. The moment the classic "Could not decrypt this message" pops up, they are gone. Matrix would probably be better since the clients don't suck as much, but Synapse is kind of a pain in the ass and it still doesn't properly handle E2EE keys anyway.
