Gambling on sport is literally ancient. So are yellow journalism (i.e. old-school rage bait), porn, easily-dismissed dating ads (they used to be in the newspaper classifieds), and trendy music.
Short-form television, food delivery, and remote shopping (Sears) aren't ancient, but they are old.
What's new and bad is that most of these things are controlled by like 3 companies, and almost nobody's seeking decentralized alternatives.
