@ewenmcneill@cloudisland.nz If you had to start over, would you stay with Homebrew over the alternatives (MacPorts, Nix, install everything ad hoc)?

@kbob@chaos.social having used both HomeBrew and MacPorts, at this point I’d use HomeBrew on Apple Silicon and MacPorts on x86. MacPorts is way better at supporting older macOS and older architectures. But generally has fewer things packaged. I’ve never used Nix (anywhere), and all I’ve seen online makes it look like a very “buy the whole ecosystem” choice. Homebrew / MacPorts are both considerable convenience improvements over hand installing everything.
