Its very funny to me that these days Link is the genderfluid one of much fan cannon obsession. Back in my day, Zelda just dressed up as a ninja sometimes and was a mysterious ninja badass, smoke bombs and everything! It must have been a pretty tight binder, fooled me! Presumably also must have done a fair deal of voice training as well, as Link doesn’t even figure it out untill she literally flashes him.
