@MrBerard@mastodon.acm.org @emilymbender@dair-community.social Today I needed to pull together some critique guidelines for writers' group. There are lots of sites with a list of 10 or 15 of the best guidelines for writers groups. There are also sites that dig into academic research on feedback. It would've been a perfect task to handle in a few minutes with an “AI”. But instead I put together some search terms to find the kinds of guidelines I was looking for. And then I read 20 different webpages and pulled out the highlights that best matched our group. It probably took me a couple hours. I ended up with much better results that exactly matched my goals. Plus I found two webpages that had an excellent deep dive on feedback, which I will recommend that all of the writers read along with the guidelines. I also learned a lot, and ended up with a great quote to include from Kurt Vonnegut. LLM's are just another tool to drive every individual into the modern capitalist race to hell. "You have to use this tool because your competitors are using it and they'll be able to do more than you." I know a number of independent contractors and virtual assistants and others who are caught in this trap. They can't move fast enough without the stuff and nobody cares about the quality. And they justify the ecological damage by saying that someone will solve it eventually. It's not a tool, it's a drug.
