As a variation on this, I'm sure lots of people have "spare" mini servers and stuff like Raspberry Pi boards lying around unused. Instead of someone sending a server, people could share out access to friends. There are all sorts of problems around trust, though, unfortunately, as well as potential liability. It seems like it could work well between friends, who can agree what's acceptable and not and who can keep each other honest, but it seems like it would be hard to scale without attracting griefers and other bad eggs. Still, interesting concept to think about...
