@handi@mastodon.ie @nixCraft@mastodon.social @clickhere@mastodon.ie @ronfromnl@mastodon.social It doesn't sound too crazy to me. As a variation on this, I'm sure lots of people have "spare" mini servers and stuff like Raspberry Pi boards lying around unused. Instead of someone sending a server, people could share out access to friends.
There are all sorts of problems around trust, though, unfortunately, as well as potential liability. It seems like it could work well between friends, who can agree what's acceptable and not and who can keep each other honest, but it seems like it would be hard to scale without attracting griefers and other bad eggs.
Still, interesting concept to think about...

@muddle@infosec.exchange @nixCraft@mastodon.social @clickhere@mastodon.ie @ronfromnl@mastodon.social Agreed. It needs tweaking... Maybe add Tor to mask the server IP. The biggest issue is the possible hosting of illegal or unethical material... Two paradigms spring to mind: A community similar to couchsurfing where you build trust. Or a server version of dumpster diving. You find unused or hidden power sockets in busy buildings. Place a 'Do Not Unplug' sticker on the mini-PC and hope for the best... 😍
