I think proper mental health must involve, on some level, respecting the fact that you are a very thin conscious layer over a mammalian brain structure shared with wild animals, and while your higher thought processes may override those needs in the short-term, over the long-term, you're still an animal with basic needs like food security, shelter, territory you control, exercise, socializing, being horny, etc. and trying to ignore them instead of just taking a walk sometimes will be seriously detrimental no matter how many spoons you have. At the same time, it's silly to assume that a future civilization will grow "beyond" such "base impulses". As C.S. Lewis pointed out, the fear of being perceived as childish is, itself, a childish thing. I think a highly advanced society might give itself more control over ancient feral urges while still preserving and shamelessly indulging in some of them, because they know better than to be ashamed of such desires.

@cloudhop@equestria.social i dislike the entire idea of "you are a thin thing piloting the animal brain", i like to think of it more like we ARE animals conditioned to believe we are not, we're far more advanced than most animals in cognition, pattern-seeking and language, but we still gotta be apes, cause we are it's the same misinfo related to "humans are a frontal cortex piloting a mammal brain piloting a reptile brain and they all work separately and never ever share any information nor exist in harmony" cause that entire construction is based upon the idea that somehow humans are "beyond" instinct instead of engaging in harmony anyway i do love the concept of a space orgy cause i can see aliens just being like "yeah we reached peak happiness by just being able to indulge in our original programming as we were meant to" and laugh at our puritanism like "??? whyy???? you are denying your brain of its basic functions"
