Remember that meme that went around a year or so ago .. "Wanna come back to my place? I'll put the heating on!" Now it's air con. Now it's heat or eat, as well as cool or school (uniform). I was lucky to find a cheap portable air con unit on eBay a couple months ago. Using it as much as I had to the last couple weeks has cost me double on the leccy. I'm almost lucky enough to afford it, though it's gonna be tight. I know many can't. In the UK we live in buildings designed to retain heat. We live on top of eachother sharing walls and floors and ceilings with our neighbours. There is no scheme, and trust me I've looked, to support lower or even middle income households with cooling. This summer is already hard. Next summer will be worse. This is not a 'remember that heatwave of 26' scenario. This is just the beginning. Councils need to be doing something now. Provide grants to install solar panels and air con in brick buildings. Paint the outer walls white. But they are too much in denial. Aslong as the new builds have heat pumps and EV chargers they've ticked that box and can sleep at night. Fucking deluded. #climateChange #Heatwave
