There's something in the planet / cosmic disconnect of western culture that celebrates a numerically-defined reference to a rotation around the sun, vs another that celebrates the shared experience of the return of a star cluster over the horizon.

@JulianOliver@mastodon.social Here in Hawai’i it’s known as Makahiki and happens in October/November. I love that the Polynesians basically followed the same constellation around the Pacific and had a celebration every time it returned in the sky.
