Listening to Inheritance by Harvey Whitehouse, an anthropology book on the origins of religion and he discusses grave goods as proof people have always believed in an afterlife, but I think it's equally plausible that people just didn't want to deal with the arguments about who gets to inherit what. Is belief in an afterlife more intrinsic than squabbling over who gets the shiny things?
