I’ve seen only one decent photo of the buckled column in the Manhattan building that’s been evacuated. Looks like a wide flange section with plates stitch-welded between the flanges to make a box. It’s buckled in the weak direction with local buckling on the compression side of the flange. Maybe the welding wasn’t sufficient to make the section and the plates act as a single unit, which would reduce the column’s buckling strength in the weak direction. https://abc7ny.com/post/midtown-east-buildings-evacuated-construction-workers-find-buckling-beams-21st-floor-nyc/19463640/
