It occurs to me; I don't know whether Steam was actually using the AMD GPU, which is why the gaming performance was poor, or whether it's just that the GPU isn't really up for that particular task.
I shall investigate tomorrow.

It would appear that I've cooked the iMac. Turns out a 12 year old, sealed computer is likely to get filled up with dust that gently cooks the thermal paste into uselessness. According to smartmontools, the SSD is hitting 87⁰C, which is Quite Warm. It won't output to the second display, boots to GRUB *really* slowly, and is generally acting fucky. So this weekend I'll get to crack 'er open and give 'er a bit of spit and polish.
