Today's #1001albums is the Red Hot Chili Pepper's Californication. This was everywhere as a teenager; TV, radio and computer games. I owned the tab book and tried to learn a few of the songs to moderate success. In that sense I don't think I'll ever escape it. After all the these years I still feel it is a very mixed bag; the title track plus Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue, Otherside and Road Trippin' are great. But a lot of the rest just feels like a manic mess. Perhaps that's fine, but it's so jarring to transition between these two worlds, back and forth, between tracks. Especially the switch 'Get On Top' after that very introspective run of three calmer songs. 'Porcelain' has also always felt like it got lost in the track listing, squashed between 'Easily' and 'Emit Remmus'.
