I just keep thinking about this quote from Adrian Tchaikovsky's "service model". The level of complexity in interaction required for an artificial system to convince a human that it is a person is pathetically low.” It's not the whole story of LLM's, of course - there's a huge layer of grift! But it explains a lot.
