PSA - Naloxone (Narcan) is NOT a fix for overdoses. It buys you a little time to get someone to an emergency room. Writing this b/c I’ve heard people suggest otherwise at least twice recently. (Including Rolling Stone) Always call 911 after you’ve given someone Narcan. The victim of an overdose needs professional medical care immediately - even when they start to look better in response to this medication. #healthcare #PSA

  • @tsyum@thepit.social CDC does not exactly say that. They write: "f you give someone naloxone, stay with them until emergency help arrives or for at least four hours to make sure their breathing returns to normal." Texas currently has a Good Samaritan law for Naloxone only but not other things, and that protects only the person calling but not the overdosing person. https://www.healthline.com/health/substance-use/calling-911-for-overdose#good-samaritan-laws https://www.cdc.gov/stop-overdose/caring/naloxone.html

@tsyum@thepit.social I recently completed Québec’s First Responder (Secourist) course. We were advised that we might have to administer Naloxone multiple times because once a dose wears off, the patient can go back into the symptoms of an overdose. The goal is not to wait that long, but get professionals involved ASAP. Absolutely, call 911 as soon as possible.

@tsyum@thepit.social Seconding this message. Narcan will work for 30-120 minutes. The opioids generally last longer. So the golden hour is still the golden hour. The situation is still an emergency. If you don't get the person to advanced medical care then chances are they are gonna have those opiates hit again and return to overdose symptoms, like not breathing.

@tsyum@thepit.social And sometimes you need more than one dose. I've seen 5 doses.
