One way to be a better man: just... respond to things with niceties.
My brother sent me a picture yesterday over whatsapp, of him and his son watching the Argentina/Egypt match. My nephew was on a couch waving a wand, and my brother said "He's got the magic wand, for help."
And I said nothing.
Later on it hit me, and I went back and said "I didn't tell you before, but [nephew] is very cute".
It cost me absolutely nothing. It felt good in fact. And it made him feel good, I'll bet.

Now, this is delicate, because for men, complimenting women is a delicate affair with power imbalances baked in. @alice@lgbtqia.space said it well, and I'll try to paraphrase: if you're going to compliment as a man, do it while always leaving the other person a way out. Compliment *as you're leaving*. Compliment *and leave*. Don't compliment *and expect something in return*.
