It’s a big ask, but Mastodon 5.0 needs to drop backwards compatibility for legacy versions. Ancient instances running v1, v2, or v3 should no longer be allowed to federate with modern servers.
1st, it’s a massive security liability. Running unpatched code from 2018 makes these zombie servers prime targets for botnets and spam relays. Cutting them off would instantly eliminate a major source of malicious traffic and protect the modern Fediverse from exploits originating on abandoned nodes.
