@WiteWulf@cyberplace.social Not US, but basically if he's declared dead within so many days of the upcoming elections, a special election for his replacement isn't needed. Or as it stood, the Governor of the state could directly appoint a replacement, which they didn't want as the Governor is a Democrat.

In the US each state has laws determining the process of replacing US Senators and US Representatives that do not finish their term (e.g. resignation, death, disability or impeachment & removal). The federal law https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/IF11907 Kentucky is 1 of 5 states that require a special election only but if it is too close to the scheduled election in November there isn't sufficient time to hold the special election. 1/
