Women, Black and brown people were supposed to be afraid and sidelined.
I did see some signs that some people were uneasy being seen. For that reason, I used my camera a bit differently this year, but a lot of these people had to earn their right to be part of the American conversation and they're clearly not complying in advance.

A lot of Americans probably don't feel like celebrating occasions like this right now. Some may feel conflicted about appearing happy. Do it. Celebrate. Do joy. We need that to keep going. Let others wonder what you are celebrating.
