Antonio Gramsci met a pretty tragic end. Jailed by the Mussolini regime in Italy for 11 years and eventually just withered away from illness. Died too young just like so many victims of fascism.

Managed to go on an absolute tear with the prison notebooks though, even under surveillance, and deliver excellent analysis of culture and hegemony.
