Thinking about it more, last night's #Monsterdon "Earth vs the Spider" was obviously set in some sort of isolated pocket-world. Maybe a natural plateau like in "The Lost World", but probably something more artificial like "The Truman Show", or "It's a Good Life". Think about it. Nobody ever leaves town, and the only characters are locals known personally to the sheriff.The long distance lines are out, and never fixed.The nearby, but out-of-town, university is supposedly offered a chance to examine the giant spider, but they show no interest.In fact, no out-of-towners at ALL show up to gawk at the spider, despite several days passing, and local news coverage. But the biggest clue is the locals' behavior. They have a Rock & Roll band, but there's no evidence they've ever heard any Rock & Roll.They operate a high school, but they clearly don't know what it's for.The Sheriff acts like he learned about his job from a western movie. (Right down to "swearing in" a posse to look for a missing person.) Clearly, they live in some kind of bubble. Perhaps it's an experiment being run by aliens. Perhaps they're just trapped in a box canyon, cut off from civilization for who knows how many centuries, but still going through the motions. It's a much deeper story than I thought.
