I don't mean to say that people don't mix languages. Obviously we do. Spanglish, for example, is pretty widespread. But Spanglish tends to happen in communities where an English speaking culture has influenced Spanish speakers or vice versa, and where there are a lot of people who speak both English and Spanish.

Crucially, adults who speak in a mixture of two languages are typically pretty good at code switching around monolingual people. They don't usually just say words without noticing what language they're in.
