The 'Sandai Jitsuroku' (日本三代実録) describes the first goryō-e at Shinsen-en (神泉苑) in 865. It was an extraordinary affair during which even the common people were given access to the palace's private garden. An altar was erected to the 6 goryō and entertainment provided.

  • This goryō-e did not become a regular event. Rather it was held in remarkable or dire situations. It did, however, lead to the creation of the Shimogoryō and Kamigoryō shrines (下御霊神社/上御霊神社) to permanently enshrine the now protective goryō (御霊) as powerful guardians.
