This goryō-e did not become a regular event. Rather it was held in remarkable or dire situations. It did, however, lead to the creation of the Shimogoryō and Kamigoryō shrines (下御霊神社/上御霊神社) to permanently enshrine the now protective goryō (御霊) as powerful guardians.

  • The goryō-e itself is thought to have mimicked the far more ancient 'Tatarukami o utsushiyaru' (遷却祟神祭), a folk ceremony performed by shamans to cast out 'tatarigami' (祟神), powerful demons thought to bring death, fire, famine, plague and war. #GionMatsuri #祇園祭 #Kyoto
