The goryō-e itself is thought to have mimicked the far more ancient 'Tatarukami o utsushiyaru' (遷却祟神祭), a folk ceremony performed by shamans to cast out 'tatarigami' (祟神), powerful demons thought to bring death, fire, famine, plague and war.

When a particularly bad epidemic struck in 869 the court prepared for a goryō-e (御霊会), but adapted the service to better suit events. In place of the 6 goryō (御霊), the plague god (疫神) enshrined at Kanshin-in (感神院) was brought to Shinsen-en to be worshipped. #Japan #京都
