When a particularly bad epidemic struck in 869 the court prepared for a goryō-e (御霊会), but adapted the service to better suit events.
In place of the 6 goryō (御霊), the plague god (疫神) enshrined at Kanshin-in (感神院) was brought to Shinsen-en to be worshipped.

It seems that the plague god at Kanshin-in (感神院) had no specific name at this time. Some theorize that the Yasaka clan (八坂氏), an immigrant family, founded Kanshin-in (forerunner of Yasaka Shrine) in 657. They enshrined the god of pestilence (later known as Gozu Tennō) here.
