I actually don't understand how tags work so I just pick ones off my head that are more or less related to the post I'm making. I use tags in other places on the net to find what I'm looking for. Sometimes I go overboard but my posts disappear in a week anyway so I don't end up cluttering other instances of my posts
I'm sorta torn apart between using and not using tags. Some people still get interaction without ever using tags

@reallylazybear@mastodon.social What I tend to do is use them when I'm posting about something that's a little outside of what I usually post - like games, sports, or whatever, that I suspect not many people follow me "for", so that I can maybe interact with some people outside my immediate network. I do follow a few, and I do get occasional posts in my feed because of this, I'm not seeing the whole network, but I think I generally see *enough*. And then there's #monsterdon which is just a whole 'nother thing
