When workers organize, demand higher wages, or refuse to accept intensified exploitation, capital deploys machinery. The machine doesn't just replace the striking workers. It disciplines them. It sends a message to every worker in every factory: you are replaceable. The machine will do your job. Your only choice is to accept what capital offers or be replaced by a mechanism that never asks for a raise. The mechanism operates at two levels. First, the direct replacement: the machine eliminates the striking worker's job. Second, the systemic threat: the existence of the machine depresses wages for everyone who remains, because everyone knows the machine is waiting. The threat IS the weapon. The machine does not need to replace every worker. It only needs to replace enough workers that the rest are too afraid to organize. The threat "someone using AI will replace you" is constant and ambient. The layoffs make it real. The layoffs are real. Contrary to popular belief the 153,000+ and climbing tech layoffs this decade were not caused by AI, most were post-pandemic corrections. But they were legitimated by AI. Every layoff announcement came with a pivot-to-AI narrative. To shareholders: they are cutting costs and their stock surges temporarily. To the workers: the model is coming for your job too. Accept the new terms. Stop complaining. The machine is watching.
