@vampiress@eigenmagic.net It is an interesring post, thank you for sharing it! One of the things you wrote enlightned me: average. I had not thought that LLMs were average, but that’s it. They are just average. And average means that it is inauthentic, in the sense that oneself did not choose it.

The TL;DR version is essentially this: Writing code is not just creative in the "writing code is an art as well as a science" sense, but also in that every line of code you don't write is a million tiny design decisions you are NOT making.

@vampiress@eigenmagic.net the thing that I hate the most about the process is that poisoning you mention. Once you have a default in your face it becomes very difficult to turn that creativity back at that element.

@vampiress@eigenmagic.net In my work domain (I'm a data analyst, mostly by writing SQL) I am yet to see anything to suggest that LLMs can do the things I'm usually doing. Perhaps that's because what is "usual" for me comes from being asked to do things that no-one seems to have already done. So even though people assume that "data analysis" is about plugging data into existing tools, for me that is rarely the case - and this is why your description of using LLMs for prototyping also rings true for my coding.

@vampiress@eigenmagic.net This post is excellent - you put into words exactly how it felt when I originally experimented with an LLM - there are so many small choices that lie below conscious thought that make up my personality. Even if the LLM follows my instructions to the word, I still gave up control on many micro-decisions and the end result is... average.
