@Sea1Am@mastodon.social the undertold story of early colonization is directly related to the fur trade, and hunting/trapping of beavers in North America. We’ve seen the hats, but one of the main drivers of this trade was a bit of fashion called the “merkin”. In my mind, that’s the real etymology of “American”… “the place where the merkins come from”. #bringbackthebeaver
