@jackyan@mastodon.social truthfully, i wasnt 100% sure how it fitted in until this calendar https://matariki.twoa.ac.nz/maramataka/ from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa which shows Pipiri then Ruhanui. Makes sense - Pipiri is the star higher in the sky so it would mark the month. Then when Matariki cant be seen in the 3/4 or Tangaroa moon, Ruhanui would kick in. Then Takurua, the star for the next month applies at the next new moon.
Pipiri - Sheratan
Ruhanui - Hamal
Takurua - Sirius

@jackyan@mastodon.social so the extra month is actually the second month of the long cycle, not the last in the long cycle. making the description of Ruhanui as the 37th moon correct, but not it as the last month of the three year cycle. 🤔 not very sure. Really, i have to work through it more. Check the dates and moons and matariki visibilty etc
