I've been taking care of my computer stuff for roundabout 30 years now, and that gave me some insights. Any hardware can and will fail. Any box you can't open and service isn't yours. Any cable will fail. Any wired connection is preferable to wireless. There is no such thing as "autodetect". Defaults are an OK start if you can change them, if you can't they suck. Any file you have no backup of is to be considered lost. Anything you have on subscription is to be considered gone tomorrow. Any line of code you write you will have to revise some day. Any software you use will have to be replaced some day. There's a lot that you can deduct from this, but they are all principles on how to build and use things rather than specifics on what to use. Put together, it all boils down to something that is very antithetical to how we use computers these days: a simple system that you know inside and out is the best. And Steve Jobs was a rat bastard for the disservice he did us all.
