I also use email, both for work and for staying in touch with friends. I have an XMPP server (though I rarely use it), and some of my friends are on Matrix which also has multi-line messages. I don't think multi-line messages are bad per se, and every IRC network I'm on won't kill you for sending a few lines in rapid succession, as if they were multi-line messages. As I stated earlier, saying flood kills are a main concert as to why IRC is unusable is just making up an excuse to denounce IRC as a whole.in fact it has no downsidesUnless you just wanted to casually chat, rather than send essays back and forth. For the essay sending we already have other platforms, so I fail to see why IRC must change if its simply better to use a different tool for a different job.it's understood having them is a good thingIts understood to be a good thing to have different tools for different jobs.xmpp was partially designed as a replacement for emails. this is not "abuse" or "feature bloat" or whateverIndeed, XMPP was designed for that kind of discussion, IRC is not. Meanwhile, in practice, IRC isn't broken for discusssions either.
