you may know that AppleScript existed, but was less well known now, and what was more well known in the past and far more important then, is that many MANY programs had AppleScript support to make the whole program scriptable. there were official guides for how to do this

and AppleScript was similar to HyperScript, so you could transition from scripting Hypercard stacks to scripting your whole computer, automating huge workflows, with relative easy eventually AppleScript lead Sal Soghoian developed Automator, a GUI tool to make it even easier
