I feel that journalists should have a deeply-engrained understanding that right-wing politicians will always lie about marginal tax rates. This happens consistently. Every time someone proposes to raise the tax rate over a certain threshold a right-wing politician will pretend that this means that all income under the threshold will also be taxed at the same rate. If you don't ridicule them for being incompetent, they’ll keep doing it. I mean, if you do ridicule them, the most you can expect is that that particular right-wing politician will stop lying about marginal tax rates for a few weeks, passing the buck on to someone else to continue lying about marginal tax rates.
