1. Swallow the AI hype. 2. Fire your skilled humans. 3. Discover that the AI does inferior work. 4. Hire back the humans TO TRAIN THE AI. Coming soon: 5. Fire the humans again. 6. Discover that the AI does inferior work. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgrkd41n2v9o

@gleick@mas.to I'm trying to remember if it was Ford or GM who had the commercial, back in the mid-1980's AI hype-cycle, with the older mechanic answering questions. The commercial showed the Q/A session being being coded into an "AI". The basic tech at the time was "decision trees". I'm guessing that someone at the car manufacturer got all frisky about SmallTalk. IIRC the end result was the same type of overall organizational failure. I'm guessing it cost a lot less, though, to learn the lesson that time.

  • @gleick@mas.to It's not that "AI does inferior work" It's "Getting AI to do quality work is a high level skill" People, especially #Aiantagonists believe the hype that AI is a magical fairy dust (albeit ground from fairies). The reality is, you need to beat AI with a stick to get quality output.
