Reflecting on how there are so few public spaces where you can just hang out without spending money (ie libraries, parks) in the US - and it totally makes sense.
The system is optimized for people using their time to either (1) make money, or (2) spend money. Time spent any other way is a perverse affront to what it means to be American.
(But it doesn't have to be this way - its just what our system ended up creating).

This is also true not just for _space_ but also _time_! The "retirement age" where you can withdrawl income from social security or your tax-advantaged accounts is carefully calculated to keep you in the workforce for the majority of your productive earning years. Without realizing it, you are effectively an indentured servant of the USofA simply by virtue of not being born rich. #USPol
