We're back at our #cottage on the #Bridgewater #Canal. This morning, for the first time, we took a #walk over the #Preston #Brook #Tunnel to see the southern portal and #Dutton #drydock. There's a little further information about the images in the ALT text.

@ukwaterways@fedigroups.social Having had a brief chat with the #engineer we encountered who was checking the #tunnel portal, we proceeded up the long straight #track over the hill, passing two of the #construction shafts along the way. Back in the 1770s, when the tunnel was built, you sank a shaft down to the level you wanted the canal to run at and then dug outwards in two directions until the tunnels met.
