Having had a brief chat with the #engineer we encountered who was checking the #tunnel portal, we proceeded up the long straight #track over the hill, passing two of the #construction shafts along the way.
Back in the 1770s, when the tunnel was built, you sank a shaft down to the level you wanted the canal to run at and then dug outwards in two directions until the tunnels met.

@ukwaterways@fedigroups.social Once you cross the #mainroad where the #Tunnel Top pub still stands but has clearly been closed for a number of years you zig-zag to reach Tunnel Top South the lane that takes you to the southern #portal of the #tunnel. It is signed to #Dutton #drydock. #lane #shaft #canal #boating
