When I first start learning basic addition and subtraction, teachers would use practical problems to connect it to reality for students. If I have 3 apples and you take 1, how many do I have left?
And after that, we never do that again. Oh you want to understand the practical application of this math and how it interacts with the world? Fuck you, memorize formulas.

@ellesaurus@toot.lgbt NGL: we can only comprehend complex topics, including maths and a range of science-ones, due to finding simplified means of understanding them. Analogies, metaphors, similes, comparisons, and similar things are all so necessary for most of us to understand something. If we cannot ELI5 something to somebody, we do not understand it well enough to teach it, and vice versa with them explaining it to us.
